I know I’ve discussed this topic before, but it’s worth repeating. Our attitude may not be everything, but it sure is important!
It impacts how we see and how we react to every situation. The beauty of our attitude is that we can control it – we do have choices.
For example, many years ago, I was very unhappy at work. My department chair didn’t like me. He gave me a poor teaching schedule; my classes were all over the campus — you get the picture. I’m sure his goal was to get me to leave the department or college.
I had three choices:
- Stay and accept the situation
- Stay and look for ways to change the situation
- Leave
I loved teaching public speaking at the college, so leaving or changing departments wasn’t an option. Accepting the situation got harder each semester, as my schedule got worse and worse. So, what did I do?
I found a way – with the help of others in the department– to get him removed as the chairman.
When I include the topic of attitude in some of my presentations on accountability, coaching and leadership, I reinforce the message that we aren’t victims; we always have choices.
