Call me old-fashioned. I’ve been called worse.

When I say, “Thank you” to someone for anything, the response I want is, “You’re welcome.”

Here’s an example: I ask a server to bring me water. He does. I say, “Thank you.” He says, “No problem.” I didn’t think it would be a problem – it’s his job, after all. “You’re welcome” would have been the proper response.

Someone holds open the door for me. I say, “Thank you.” The response? “No problem.” When did “no problem” replace the phrase “You’re welcome” in the English lexicon?

Personally, I find this trend offensive.

In the service industry – that’s anyone who is providing customer service – people should be taught to say, “You’re welcome” as part of their job training.

I promise, it doesn’t hurt. Nor is it hard. It’s grammatically correct, too.  And, best of all, it’s the proper response to “Thank you.”
