I’m returning from a week of R and R and R and R – rest, relaxation, recreation and revelation. It’s always amazing to me how restorative this time off can be.
In reviewing the people I met and the conversations I had, one point sticks out for me: Life is filled with choices … Where we go, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, etc. I had previously blogged about avoiding “victimitis.” This blog is another reminder about the choices we have.
What made me sad when reviewing these conversations, was realizing how many people are currently miserable with where they are in life. No one makes people stay where they are. I realize that people have responsibilities, and with the economy the way it is, it’s harder to find new opportunities. However, if they are truly unhappy … do something about it!
In my presentation “Accountability: 4 Keys to Manage Success (Yours & Others),” I say that you have three choices:
1) Stay and accept it
2) Stay and make changes (exact job, department, processes, etc.)
3) Leave
I actually said this to a few people I know recently. Their reactions were interesting. Mostly, I heard, “You’re right. I do have a choice. I need to stop being a victim.”
So, what’s the point of this blog?
1) Try some R and R and R and R
2) Remember, you do have choices – not always good ones, but choices nonetheless.
