I’ve been thinking a lot lately about attitude adjustment.
We often think that other people will benefit from an attitude adjustment: our boss, our colleagues, maybe even our family. Few people ask themselves: “Do I need one?”
If the colleague reading this blog over your shoulder may be nodding silently behind you, it might be time to dig deeper and ask yourself, “What am I doing to maintain my morale?”
You’ve heard it before: We can’t always control what happens, but we can control how we respond. Attitude is a choice. I am not a “Pollyanna.” I prefer to think of myself as a positive person. Even for me, keeping a positive attitude is sometimes difficult.
Here are my personal techniques to stay upbeat and positive:
- Take 100% responsibility for how you respond to situations – no victim mentality
- Set a good example
- Hang around with “winners” — not whiners
- Believe in yourself
- Focus on the positives in your life
I also believe that regular exercise, laughter, an occasional “treat” (chocolate, a massage, seeing a good movie) all help.
Journaling — particularly about what I am grateful for — and focusing on the good, are other ways that help ensure I keep a positive attitude.
I would love to know your ideas, too.
